Are there Different types of Asthma?
Asthma is divided into two different categories according to what triggers the asthma. These categories are allergic, or extrinsic asthma, and non-allergic, or intrinsic asthma
People with allergic asthma have a sensitivity to something in the environment with triggers an immune response in the body resulting in airway restriction and mucus production. These environmental triggers vary and include dust, mold, pollen, roaches, mites, animal saliva, dander or fur, food and more!
In non-allergic asthma, the immune system is not involved in the reaction, but the airways still be become irritated and inflamed. Non-allergic asthma is triggered by other factors such as anxiety, stress, exercise, cold air, dry air, hyperventilation, smoke, perfume, or other irritants.
For clinical purposes asthma is also classified by medical professionals according to the severity and frequency of attacks, and measurements using a peak flow meter.
